Home Maintenance Tips For Furnace And Heating

Before the winter season arrives it is especially important to make sure your furnace and heating systems are in good working order so they keep your family nice and toasty in the coming months.

Home maintenance tips for your furnace:

  • Lower your energy bills by changing the air filters in your furnace regularly, about every three months. Filters are very inexpensive and can be replaced in just a few minutes.  Dirty air filters will prevent the furnace from heating your house efficiently and will end up wasting money and energy.
  • If you have permanent air filters they should be cleaned and rinsed off once a month to maintain optimum performance.
  • Make sure you keep a cover over your filter’s slot. This will allow for more efficient heating throughout your house.

Keep in mind that the type of air filter you have affects the way in which it needs to be properly maintained. For example, pleated filters, if taken cared of properly, will last as long as three months. Electronic filters should be cleaned every other month to keep them in optimal working condition.

If you will be performing your own furnace maintenance, make sure you turn off the fuel supply and the power to your furnace before you begin working on it. Check with a professional if you’re not sure how to properly maintain your furnace. Remember, safety first.

It is important to check for any potential gas leaks in your furnace before working on it. Your local gas company will normally do this for you at no charge. Also, be sure to inspect every part of your furnace and checking the ductwork for leaks. Older furnaces will need a new fan belt periodically, and these should be replaced when necessary.

Furnace breakdowns often occur during the winter months.  Don’t get left in the cold. You can save yourself time and money with a home repair warranty that will not only cover furnace and heating system repairs, but all other major appliances as well.
